Does Kratom Show Up On A Drug Test?

Does kratom show up on a drug test

Kratom is native to Southeast Asia and is closely related to the coffee plant. This product has been harvested for centuries in Asian culture. It has finally made its way to the western world and many people are wondering, “Does kratom show up on a drug test?”

Kratom does not show up on a standardized drug screen, but it could show up if it is being tested for. There are custom drug screens available that can allow employers or parole officers to test for kratom specifically. Let’s take a closer look at kratom when it comes to a drug screen.

KRATOM BACKGROUND

Kratom is available online and through local retailers such as Simple Botanical. It is not federally regulated, but each state has its laws surrounding kratom. The DEA did have concerns surrounding kratom and tried to classify it as a Schedule I Substance. However, the bill was taken off of the table because of the overwhelming support that kratom received.

Currently, there are not enough clinical trials and scientific studies to help support kratom. Over time, more light will be shed on kratom and what it has to offer.

KRATOM AND DRUG TESTING

Does kratom show up on a drug test? Kratom will not show up on a standard drug test. A lot of people have to worry about being drug tested randomly through their work. If you are worried that kratom could cause you to fail a drug screen, the best policy is not to take it.

However, for kratom to show up on a drug test an employer would have to be screening for it. Most will not pay the extra money to screen for specific drugs. They will stick to standardized testing.

If kratom is heavily frowned upon in an area it would be possible that an employer would pick up on that and add it to their drug screen. You have to also account for how long kratom will stay in your body. Your overall weight, how much you have eaten, and your health will all play a key role in how long kratom will be detected in your system.

Kratom is not an illegal substance in most parts of the United States. It is easily accessible online or through local retailers.

States, where kratom has been ban, include:

  • Alabama
  • Arkansas
  • Indiana
  • Rhode Island
  • Vermont
  • Wisconsin

In addition, the following states have some restrictions regarding kratom use:

  • California – kratom is legal except in San Diego County.
  • Florida – kratom is legal except in Sarasota County.
  • Illinois – kratom is legal but with an age restriction.
  • New York – kratom is legal but with an age restriction.

Different Types of Drug Test

Standard drug tests are not set up to detect kratom alkaloids. There are drug tests that can detect kratom alkaloids but they are rare. For a drug test to detect a particular substance, it would need to look for that substance or its metabolites. Every time a substance is added to a drug screen it will cause the test to be more expensive. This is something that most employers are not willing to pay for. This is why they will stick to standardized testing.

Federal Workplace Drug Testing Guidelines falls into 5 broad categories:

  • Amphetamines
  • Methamphetamines
  • Marijuana (particularly THC)
  • Cocaine
  • Opiates

DRUG TESTS

Does kratom show up on a drug test? For the most part, employers will use a 5-panel drug test. There are other tests including 7-panel, 10-panel, and 12-panel. The most intense type of drug screen is a 20-panel. It is aimed more at opioids, but it will not detect kratom alkaloids. So, even an intense drug test is not geared to pick up on kratom.

To put your mind at ease, kratom will require specialty labs to do extensive testing and this is not something that most employers are willing to pay for. Kratom is a legal substance in most areas.

Here is each type of drug screen and what they are looking for.

  • 5-Panel Drug Test – THC, Opiates, PCP, Cocaine, and Amphetamines.
  • 6-Panel Drug Test – THC, opiates, cocaine, amphetamines,
  • methamphetamines, and benzodiazepines.
  • 7-Panel Drug Test – THC, opiates, PCP, cocaine, amphetamines,
  • benzodiazepines, and barbiturates.
  • 8-Panel Drug Test – THC, opiates, PCP, cocaine, amphetamines,
  • methamphetamines, benzodiazepines, and barbiturates.
  • 9-Panel Drug Test – THC, opiates, PCP, cocaine, amphetamines,
  • methamphetamines, benzodiazepines, barbiturates, and methadone.
  • 10-Panel Drug Test – THC, opiates, PCP, cocaine, amphetamines,
  • benzodiazepines, barbiturates, methadone, methaqualone, and propoxyphene.
  • 12-Panel Drug Test – THC, opiates, PCP, cocaine, amphetamines, benzodiazepines,
  • barbiturates, methadone, methaqualone, propoxyphene, ecstasy, and oxycodone. The most comprehensive test, as it can test for extended opiates and the misuse of prescription painkillers

Bottom line, if you are worried about does kratom show up on a drug test? you should avoid purchasing it. As we stated above, an employer would need to specifically be looking for kratom alkaloids. When it comes to standard drug tests, they will not be able to detect kratom in your system or even be looking for it.
